Water taxi ii History
Originally built for the Dohm family and Dohm’s Water Taxi, Water Taxi II has a storied history in St Thomas. Recognized by mariners across the Caribbean region, Water Taxi II was built in 1990 by Gold Coast Yachts in neighboring St. Croix. Put into service a “connector” from St Thomas to St. John, the BVI and even Puerto Rico, Water Taxi II enjoyed decades of service within the Dohm’s water taxi fleet.
Per Dohm, who took over the family water taxi business in 1959 was responsible for putting the vessel into service in the early 1990s. Dohm has since passed, but was a friend to everyone in the marine industry. We hope to continue the legacy of Water Taxi II and for decades more for our visitors to enjoy.
Water taxi ii Restoration
Beginning in early 2022, Sonic Charters began the labourious process of repairing Water Taxi II and placing her back into service.
Having been destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017, her forward pontoon featured a large impact hole, roof was severely rotten and floor was unsafe to walk on.
Over the course of 12 long months, lots of woodwork, fiberglass, filling, sanding and painting, Water Taxi II began to take shape again and is now back better than ever before. Every square inch of Water Taxi II has been tended to and features all new electrical, plumbing, glass and engines.
Water Taxi II and Last Mile Water Taxi are excited to place her back in service for another 30 years of work ahead!
